AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a post-secondary readiness program that prepares students for any path they wish to follow upon graduation. With a focus on WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) skills, in addition to study techniques, questioning strategies, critical thinking, career preparation, and writing-to-learn skills, the AVID elective class also includes enrichment activities that give students the transferable tools needed for academic success throughout their high school years and beyond. AVID targets students who have a desire to go to college and a willingness to work hard while identifying that there are places that they need support. Taking responsibility for one’s own learning (Individual Determination) is central to the AVID philosophy. Teacher instruction helps to support and grow this trait through student-centered activities and a rigorous curriculum.

The AVID 10-12 elective is paired with English and runs from September through June each school year.

Royal Bay Secondary is proud to provide the AVID Program as a continuation of the successful SD62 model which originated at Belmont Secondary in September 2005. AVID originated in San Diego, CA in 1980. It has been implemented in more than 7,000 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia. AVID impacts more than 2 million students in grades K–12 and in over 60 post-secondary institutions.
